Choosing a happy, healthy puppy
All puppies are cute, but not all puppies are created equal. There are several things to take into consideration when it comes to choosing a healthy, happy puppy. First of all, this is a live creature and he or she will more than likely be with you for an average of 6-10 years. Secondly, personality is genetic, and even though you may be able to train some responses into your pet his over all personality is visible now and will shape and mold him his entire life. Thirdly, and what you will have to deal with now is whether or not he is healthy. A healthy pup should have a nice looking shiny coat. He should be active and inquisitive not lehargic. He should not have runny eyes or nose, should not be sneezing or coughing, nor should you see him vomiting or having diahrrea. He should not look bloated or by any means underweight. This may not be pleasant to talk about, but a healthy pup has healthy stools and a healthy respiratory system. They look robust not scrawny. This goes for all breeds. Even small boned lanky breeds don't have puppies who look starving. Italian Greyhounds, Borzoi, Whippets, and Standard sized Greyhounds are a few of the breeds that are knows for their thinness in stature, but their puppies do not look boney or underfed! Health is also mental. A puppy should not be a coward. A puppy should not be growling at you. If a loud noise makes him scream and run for cover beware! When interacting with their siblings they should not be overly agressive or attacking other littermates. Fighting over food is a sure sign of future dominance problems. The best pup will be friendly but maybe not climbing out of his skin to be all over you. He is sure of himself and curious about new things. He is alert and responds to loud noises, but will not be overtly concerned. Remember, if that pup cannot sit still for two seconds now it might be 2-4 years before he ever settles down if he ever does. These are some very basic simple strategies to help you choose a wonderful pup. Take the time now and your pup will become a dog that is a joy to have around. Will comfort and provide companionship to match no other, and will not cause a huge financial burden on you with vet bills. Enjoy your new family member there is no richer gift than the devoted love from a pet. |
